I was in this position 4 years ago when i bought my first compost toilet, a reassuringly expensive unit from nature’s head. At first it was great, but emptying it was a struggle, guests overflowed the urine bottle, the urine diverter would get clogged, and in the winter the mixing paddle would freeze in place. I needed a better solution so i made a high quality bucket compost toilet. I had my doubts, how could something so simple be better it was better in fact it was so easy to use that guests at our cabin would empty the toilet without instruction, something that never happened with the nature’s head unit. How do you use it. Do your business (toilet paper and all) and cover it up with as much cover material as needed. When starting a new bucket, put a few scoops in before use. What is cover material. Cover material is the organic material, such as sawdust, that you add to your bucket to block odor, absorb liquid and promote composting. What cover material should i use. Most dry organic substrates can work but they all have different characteristics. Cocoa coir is popular but hard to prepare (requires soaking in water), peat moss is excellent but very dusty, saw dust is excellent but can be hard to source. A finer material does a better job of blocking odors. I like peat moss, it’s cheap and available at home depot. Anything is better than nothing, even dirt can work in a bind. How does the odor compare (sasquat to nature’s head). Both are very low odor when used properly but the nature’s head has a finite amount of cover material which leads to worsening imbalance of waste to cover ratio. -with the sasquat you add as much cover material as you need to so the balance is always maintained. The need for a mixing paddle is also eliminated. Keeping waste covered is the key to odor control. —and if you have poor ventilation you can easily remove or empty your bucket, an option that isn’t possible with nature’s head. Why no urine diverter. The internet obsesses over this topic but in my experience a urine diverter always introduces complexity that makes for a messier, more finicky toilet. One bucket no issues. Won’t odor be worse without a urine diverter. In my experience no. Urine odor like waste odor is blocked with good cover material. A jug full of urine that has no dry material is smelly grade school janitors know this, when there’s a wet mess on the floor sawdust is the ideal solution. Does urine impede composting. See the humanure handbook pg 148. How gross is a bucket of compost/waste. It’s not that gross it smells like a wet bucket of mud and mulch. Not only does it smell like earth to me it must smell that way to animals too. At first i was afraid that bears would be interested in my compost pile but they never distrubed it until i made the mistake of putting food waste in it, never again. What to do with my compost. In an ideal situation you can make a compost pile that when up to temp and maintained properly kills pathogens in the waste and in time can be used as soil. -the compost toilet can be used in a primitive camping environment where burying your waste is expected. –in a pinch compost can be bagged and disposed of in a landfill. This is a debatable practice but when you consider the millions of diapers and dog poo bags in a landfill a bag of humanure seems downright civilized.
