To learn more about my work, please consider visiting. Handcrafted at heartwood homestead farm, nestled in the southern adirondack mountains of new york. It’s amazing how a little fog can enhance a simple landscape. Misty morning brings the silhouettes of trees against low-hanging clouds on this black and grey pack basket. Timeless and enduring, the adirondack pack basket is a familiar sight in the place that i call home. Also referred to as a trappers basket, or backpack basket, the adirondack pack basket has its roots in the northeast. For centuries, native americans utilized baskets for transporting items, anything from food to furs. It is believed that french trappers adapted these pack baskets as a practical means for carrying supplies, camping and hunting equipment. They became known as adirondack pack baskets owing to their extensive use throughout the area, particularly with guides and outdoorsmen. Not just for mountain adventures, this pack basket can be used at the beach, for a picnic, as a mushroom foraging basket or even taken to the farmer’s market. Pack basket measure approximately 6.5×9(base), 9.5x 11.5 (at belly) x 15 tall (including runners). The opening is 7 x 8.5 oval. A handle is conveniently woven into the rim for easy carrying when not being worn. The harness (one size fits most adults) is cotton, with adjustable straps. Removable/replaceable plywood base and runners are included to protect the bottom of the pack basket from normal wear and tear. This basket is finished with a light coat of tung oil as a preservative. Tung oil is a natural oil extracted from nuts and has been used for centuries as a water-resistant finish for boats and other wooden objects. It is all-natural, environmentally friendly and food safe. Uses: hiking day pack, camping, ice fishing, foraging, mushroom hunting, cabin and rustic decor or storage. This item is made of cotton and reed.
